Interracial Dating (Part 2 of 2)
(Continued from Interracial Dating)Opposition by family and friends can cause a terror of abandonment that is suffered by at least one member of the bi-racial relationship. This is why it is crucial that the couple create a new world of their own making by finding other couples and friends who are supportive of them. This is why it may be important to find a support group on the Internet to bolster confidence and assure the couples that they are not uniquely damned by perverse societal or family attitudes. The couple must also find the courage and strength to transcend personal prejudice and cultivate what is worthy in each other.
Negative attitudes to interracial dating seem to prevail more in the Southern states and smaller communities. In larger urban centers and certainly in countries such as Canada and England, interracial dating is accepted and also encouraged as being the hip thing to do. In Britain, 40 per cent of black men are married to or living with a white woman, versus only 21 per cent of black women married to or living with a white man in the United States.
While it is tempting to limit our view of interracial dating to the union of a black person and a white person, it is important to recognize that this practice includes many other cultures and color lines. Interracial dating and marrying is described as the dating or marrying of two people of different races. The bonding may be within any of Asian, Afro-American, Caucasians, Hispanic or Indian. This type of bonding is becoming more popular than ever despite the negative commentary against these unions that litters the Internet.
Various articles and magazines have suggested that black females dating Caucasian men constitute the largest portion of dating activity on the web. According to a 1992 Sex in America study of 3,432 people, ten times more single white women than single white men reported that their most recent sex partner was black The second largest trend displayed nationally with regards to interracial dating is Caucasian men dating Asian women. The latest fad in interracial dating, apparently is older white women dating very young Persian or Islamic men.
Studies indicate that interracial marriages tend to last longer than same-race unions. One might think the opposite because in same-race marriages it's more likely that the couple has the approval of relatives and friends and practice the same religion. By contrast, Interracial couples seldom take anything for granted, least of all each other. They often are determined to prove critics wrong by making their union last.
Unfortunately, people who engage in interracial dating may still be the objects of derision from individuals who are unwilling to accept that interracial relationships are evidence of a world full of diversity that is finally beginning to live in acceptance and harmony.
